Why Silk?
Silk proteins are protein polymers that are secreted by a variety of species such as spiders, moths, and butterflies. At Serigen, we extract silk proteins from the cocoons of silkworm Bombyx mori, commonly known as the mulberry silkworm. Here are some reasons why we chose Silk as the building block of our diverse range of biomedical products
- Silk proteins have proven biocompatibility and exceptional thermo-mechanical stability.
- Sterile silk sutures have been used in surgery for more than a century and several manufacturers have regulatory approvals for manufacture and sales of silk sutures.
- Silk can also be processed using environment-friendly aqueous processing protocols.
Our Technology
At Serigen, we have developed innovative processing protocols to transform silk threads into a solution that can be structured and shaped into various forms to create a varied range of biomedical products.
At the heart of Serigen’s technology platform is a mastery of the materials science of silk-based polymers and a deep understanding of biomedical materials. With our patented technology, we can leverage the unique properties of silk to develop a wide range of medical devices to serve the unmet clinical needs of diverse patient communities.
